Happy Tree Week!

Richmond Tree Week is a citywide celebration of Richmond's urban forests. Coordinated annually by Reforest Richmond, this weeklong event series showcases the incredible urban greening efforts happening across our city and celebrates the people, organizations and communities that are working daily to expand tree canopy, cool down our communities, and protect our James River.

Gravel Beds Open House

Join the Richmond Tree Stewards for an open house at their gravel beds at the Northside Nursery. This is a drop-in event where Tree Stewards will be on hand to discuss the benefits of planting in gravel beds for the growth and transplantability of young shrubs and trees.

RVA Tree Bike Ride

Join the staff from Truetimber Arborists for another edition of the RVA Tree Bike Ride! This year’s chill-paced bicycle ride will feature noteworthy trees and green spaces in Richmond’s North Side. Meet at Bryan Park, and expect 10-12 mile ride through North Side. This is a no-drop ride, meaning the pace will be friendly for all attendees. Plan is to eventually split the group between folks interested in continuing the ride to the RTW 2026 Kick-off Party at Benchtop Brewery, or returning to the start.

Azalea Garden Tree Walk

Join the Friends of Bryan Park to admire and learn about a variety of native trees on the eastern edge of the Azalea Garden. Hear first hand about the benefits of native plants from VA Master Naturalists as you enjoy a leisurely walk through the gardens.

Parking can be found in the Shelter 3 lot (across from the soccer fields)

Meet at the entrance to the Azalea Garden near the intersection of Azalea Garden Loop and Rosinas Lane.

Richmond's Food Forest Tour & Volunteering in honor of Dia de los Muertos

Join Trees Company RVA at Fonticello Food Forest to learn about Richmond's vibrant, public Food Forests and how to grow trees for food, medicine, fiber, and many other functions in a verdant ecosystem. We will be helping care for the trees in the Memorial Garden of the Food Forest and celebrating our ancestors in honor of Dia de Los Muertos.

City of Richmond Tree Hugging Contest

Join Richmond Parks & Rec for the "City of Richmond Tree Hugging Competition”! After a mindful warmup and a brief talk about the benefits of trees for watersheds, cities, and people, contestants will compete in three main events: Speed hugging, Dedication, and Freestyle.

Event points are multiplied by a factor, so that the importance of speed hugging is less than that of the other two events. The judged event is for anyone 16 years or older. All are welcome to watch.

Richmond Tree Week 2026 Kick-off Party & Free Tree Giveaway! 🌳

Walk in the Woods

Join 500-Year Forest Foundation for their annual guided walk in the Carillon forest led by President, Ches Goodall. These guided walks invite people of all ages and backgrounds to explore local woodlands, learn from forest experts, and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural heritage that sustains our communities.

Bike-Up Tree Giveaway 🌳

What better way to take home your new carbon reducing, pollinator feeding, shade providing friend, than a bicycle? A collaborative effort hosted by Bike Walk RVA and your tree-loving neighbors, stop by for a free native tree and a quick bike check up!

Bike racks and/or cargo capacity encouraged. Open-top backpacks or sling bags will work in a pinch - we will do our best to send you home with a tree on your bike no matter what. Trees will be in 1 gallon pots, weigh 5-6 lbs, and range 1-2ft tall. 1 tree per bike, while supplies last.

Sportsbackers headquarters is off of the Fall Line Trail, so a great excuse to enjoy a sunset cruise. Sunset is at 5pm so don’t forget your lights!

Tree ID Walk and Invasive Removal

Join the Reedy Creek Coalition in exploring a section of Crooked Branch Ravine Park, as we walk and discuss how invasive plants arrive, spread, and impact local ecology. We will talk about efforts to save the forest, do some native tree identification, and end at the Northrop Oak where we will work on invasive plant removal. Gloves will be provided.

Workday at Hotchkiss Park
& Free Tree Giveaway! 🌳

Join Capital Trees for their bi-weekly maintenance day at the Hotchkiss Green. This newly established walking trail features a fruit orchard, pollinator beds, and shade trees. Volunteers work directly with our Horticulture Manager and take on tasks like weeding, mulching, transplanting, and occasionally planting. No prior experience required, tools and gloves will be provided.

We will also have a selection of free trees available (volunteering not required) - limit 2 per household and while supplies last.

Guided Tree Hike at Warwick Rd Future Park

Join Capital Region Land Conservancy and True Timber arborists at one of CRLC's conservation areas, to hike in the woods, talk trees, and see the forest that will become a future public park space.

Plants on the Move! What Can We Learn from Blackgum Trees?

Join the Wild Ones Greater Richmond Chapter and Ethan Skuches for a presentation on understanding, monitoring, and adapting to the shifting of trees species’ ranges in response to climate change.

While focused on Nyssa sylvatica (Black Tupelo/Blackgum), this research investigates the tree's adaptive capacity to respond to rapid environmental change. Attendees can also learn about opportunities for guided study participation and contributions by citizen scientists!

Join the Richmond Audubon Society and Richmond Tree Stewards for a special walk in Bryan Park focused on the important interactions between birds and trees! Walk through densely forested areas, open park spaces, along water features, and by tall grass & pollinator meadows, while listening to commentary on the trees we pass, with pauses when we run across bird life. Suitable for all ages and experience levels, expect dirt trails with roots as well as paved roads. Binoculars encouraged, meet at Bryan Park Shelter 1.
