Help Capital Trees kick off Richmond Tree Week with a Community Tree Planting at Byrd Park! Volunteers will assist Capital Trees and Parks & Rec staff in planting 50 trees at Byrd Park, increasing tree canopy and enhancing biodiversity in the park.
Capital Trees is a local nonprofit working to transform Richmond’s public landscapes into thriving, sustainable greenspaces. We invite you join us, get your hands in the dirt, and be part of planting a greener, healthier city! Registration required, more event details can be found on the sign-up link!
Richmond Tree Stewards Annual Tree Giveaway
Join the Richmond Tree Stewards on Saturday, November 1st for a first-come, first-serve tree giveaway for the residents of the City of Richmond. No reservations required, the event runs from 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM or until all trees are claimed. We will have 16 species of tree available to suit a wide variety of landscapes. All species will be in 1-gallon pots. There will be a limit of two trees per household.

Did you know that a single rain barrel can collect hundreds, even thousands of gallons of rainwater annually, saving residents money on their water bills, or reducing stormwater utility fees in some localities. They also help prevent nutrients from fertilizers, bacteria from pet waste, and chemicals from herbicides and pesticides from polluting our local waterways.
Join the James River Association for a rain barrel workshop at Richmond’s East End Branch Library. Staff members will instruct workshop participants on how to assemble and install rain barrels at home. The registration fee for the workshop is $50 and each registration comes with a 55-gallon drum and a RainRecycle rain barrel kit from The Rain Barrel Depot.

In this workshop learn answers to your tree questions:
How do you choose the right tree?
Where is the best place to plant it?
How do you plant it correctly?

The Richmond Audubon Society conducts a monthly bird walk in Bryan Park on the first Sunday of the month. This November 2nd, join us as we take part in Richmond Tree Week, with a special walk focused on the important interactions between birds and trees! This walk will take us through densely forested areas, open park spaces, along water features, and by tall grass & pollinator meadows. Expect commentary on the trees we pass, with pauses when we run across bird life. This event is suitable for all ages and experience levels, and will include some trails with roots as well as paved roads. Bring your binoculars if you have them and we will have loaners as well. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early at Bryan Park Shelter No. 1, so that we have a chance to meet one another before starting down the trail. No sign up is required – just show up! Crooked Branch Ravine Park is a small urban forest along Reedy Creek. It’s beautiful in some places, but there are significant issues with invasive plants. Join us for a walk to discuss how invasive plants arrive, spread, and impact local ecology. We will also talk about our efforts to save the forest, do a little tree ID along the way, and visit the old oak. We hope to spend a little time at the end removing English ivy from the ground. Gloves will be provided.

Come get your hands dirty and learn how this style of reforestation not only greatly increases biodiversity in a small area, but can also act as a “carbon sink” and mitigate stormwater runoff.

Happening every other Tuesday this fall, join in caring for young trees and shrubs by weeding out wiregrass and crabgrass. Help us eliminate the need for herbicides by hand pulling weeds and spreading mulch, and reducing competition for the saplings to grow. Gloves, trowels, and doughnuts will be provided.

Work sites change so call team leader Catherine Farmer for your day's location. Parking lot at 300 Tredegar Street opens at 9 AM on weekdays. Once parked, take the suspension bridge over to Belle Isle and meet by the Bike Skills Park. Sturdy shoes, long sleeves and long pants are recomended. Bring a water bottle. Join us for a tree planting event in Jackson Ward. This project developed through collaboration between the Historic Jackson Ward Association and the University of Richmond's Spatial Analysis Lab (Department of Geography, Environment, and Sustainability). During the summer, undergraduate students conducted an urban heat study of Jackson Ward sidewalks, identifying areas with the highest temperatures and available tree wells where new plantings could help provide some cooling relief.
We'll be planting a few trees in locations identified through this research. Come help us add some green space to the neighborhood while learning about the connection between tree coverage and urban heat. All skill levels welcome.

Join the 500-Year Forest Foundation for a walk from the Carillon Monument down the back slope through a mature forest to the Pump House and back up to the Carillon. These informative walks teach you about tree identification and the value of mature and old growth forests. The terrain is a bit steep so please wear shoes with good ankle protection, and bring your hat and water. But please leave your dogs home - these are not dog friendly walks, thank you. We meet on the front side of the Carillon facing Blanton Ave facing north. (NOT on the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater side). We will have a sign and a table for you to find us.

While a commonly seen tree in urban areas, the Bradford pear or Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) is a non-native, invasive tree that is threatening ecosystems throughout the eastern and midwestern U.S. The Virginia Department of Forestry’s “Callery Pear Exchange” program promotes the removal of these invasive trees, by providing Virginia landowners with a free replacement native tree. Help us reduce the spread of Callery pear within our natural areas, and promote plantings that support our native pollinators.
One native tree in a 2-gallon pot will be provided for every Callery pear that has been removed, with a limit of three (3) trees per household. Preregistration is required as a limited number of trees will be available. Visit our website for more details!

Stop by Hickory Hill Community Center for a free compost giveaway from the Richmond Compost Initiative! What started as a grant-funded pilot program through the City of Richmond’s Parks & Rec, has now successfully produced and delivered over 200 cubic yards of rich compost, used in Parks & Rec community gardens, pollinator meadows, and tree planting sites across the city. This finished compost was completely sourced from food scraps, leaves, and other organic materials dropped off by city residents at our compost bin sites. We are now celebrating the successful end of this pilot program (…with exciting news to come!) with a big giveaway to the community that helped support it! No registration necessary, must bring your own bucket or bag, limit 1 bucket per household.

Annual Arbor Day Ceremony
Join us for an Arbor Day Ceremonial Tree Planting and celebrate the City of Richmond's 34th year as a designated Tree City USA. The ceremony will take place in the front semi-circle off of E Broad St and N 33rd St.
Following the ceremony, stick around to learn more the Cool the City campaign and the Richmond Tree Plan, or come plant some trees with Parks & Rec and Chesapeake Bay Foundation! At this planting, volunteers will plant approximately 55 native trees. Richmond’s trees cool our city, filter air and water of pollution, and stabilize soil to reduce erosion and reduce carbon emissions.

Circular Forestry with Cambium Carbon

Cambium is a public benefit corporation aiming to disrupt the wood recycling space. The Baltimore based researchers are working on new ways to track, treat, and transfer old growth wood into the supply chain. They operate as a tech platform that connects local tree care companies and city government with lumber processors and manufacturers, for the ultimate goal of creating circular systems and local jobs.
Every piece of Cambium's "carbon smart" wood has a barcode. Scan it, and Cambium's app will identify what the species is, when it was milled, and what its grade is. TIME magazine included Carbon Smart Wood among its list of Best Inventions of 2024.
We will be discussing Cambium Carbon’s steady growth, along with a brief survey of current urban wood practices in Richmond.
