JRA Rain Barrel Workshop & Tree Giveaway

Description: Join the James River Association as they celebrate River Hero Homes Month, by participating in a rain barrel workshop and tree giveaway! Participants will learn about the benefits of rain barrels as well as how to assemble and install them. Registration for the rain barrel workshop is available on a first come first served basis and includes a 55-gallon drum, rain barrel assembly kit, a native plant, and instruction provided by James River Association staff members.

Rain barrels will be distributed between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm and a workshop will be held at 11:00 am. Advance registration is required (see link below).

Trees will also be distributed during this event in association with ArborDayRVA 2022, and are available on a first come first served basis. Information about how to properly plant trees and care for them will be shared with participants.

Richmond Tree Stewards - Tree Giveaway

Description: It’s that time of year again - time for the annual Richmond Tree Stewards Tree Giveaway! You MUST register in advance by visiting the website, where you can pick from a list of 18 trees and shrubs that are native to the area.

Then on October 15th, at your assigned timeslot, drive thru for a no-contact pickup! After 3:15pm, any leftover seedlings will be made available to the general public. Please note that these are seedlings in 6” pots, and are only for personal use and not commercial/street plantings. Description: LESS TURF, MORE TREES! Sign up with the Richmond Community ToolBank and PRCF in reforesting 1.5 acres of unnecessary lawn at Forest Hill Park, that will help support cleaner air, water, and wildlife. Volunteers will help plant, mulch and water 200 new trees along the park's loop trail. We've got the tools, trees, and time, all we're missing is you! We’ll also be giving away free tree seedlings, for those wishing to pick up a small tree for planting on their private property.

Capital Trees - Fall Workday & Tree Giveaway

Description: The chill of winter is nipping at our heels, but there is still plenty of work to do in the gardens before most of the plants go dormant. Join Capital Trees at Great Shiplock Park and along the Low Line, and lend a hand in maintaining this public urban landscape along the Capital Trail. This will be an all hands on deck event, where we will focus on prepping the gardens for winter. We welcome all participants whether this is your first time or you have volunteered with Capital Trees before! Additionally, to celebrate ArborDayRVA this year, we will have a FREE tree giveaway station from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. so stop by and pick up a tree!

UFD - Young Tree Pruning Workshop & Community Workday

Description: Post-planting tree care is often an overlooked subject when talking about trees. Join Michael Staton of the City of Richmond's Urban Forestry Division, for a hands-on workshop on how to prune and care for young trees. This workshop is suitable for homeowners looking to gain practical knowledge on how to monitor and maintain their trees.

Afterwards, we invite community members to join us and Southside ReLEAF for a site workday, where we will be checking on their recent plantings at Hickory Hill Community Center. We will be pruning, weeding tree beds, and laying down fresh mulch in preparation for the Fall and Winter months. The first 3 years after planting is considered the most critical time in ensuring healthy root and structural development, so help us ensure a future of happy trees!

Science Museum of Virginia - Tour The Green

Description: The Science Museum of Virginia invites you to come tour The Green, Richmond’s new greenspace on Broad Street. Construction of Phase 1 is scheduled to be complete by October. Come get a firsthand glimpse of the newly-built park, talk about the trees and learn more about The Green project. The Green aims to mitigate climate change impacts, improve the health of the Richmond citizens, support biodiversity in the urban ecosystem and act as a community gathering space and outdoor classroom. Phase 1 of the The Green project is approximately 2 acres in size, converted from a parking lot with approximately 78% impervious surface to approximately 77% pervious surface. 120 trees, 370 shrubs, 6,000 perennials and 42,000 square feet of sod are being installed. Phase 2 is currently in design and will encompass the famous circle drive. Eventually, the entire park will cover 6 acres across the front of the Science Museum of Virginia’s campus.

In the Spring, we will revisit these spaces with additional native trees, shrubs, and perennial plantings, further beautifying the neighborhood.
